Public and private spaces shape the lives of the people inhabiting them on a daily basis but are in turn shaped by social relations. The exhibition “Relations in Place” addresses this complex interrelation: What kind of power relations are embedded into spaces, how do they create closeness or distance – and do they facilitate caring relationships?

The works shown in the exhibition explore this area of conflicts in different ways: Artists Vanessa Amoah Opoku and Joy Weinberger deal with the challenges of diaspora: What does it mean to build a home across borders and generations? Özcan Ertek transforms the gallery into a resonance space using soundscapes recorded in Berlin, rendering the changing city audible. Zhenru Liang focusses on the (architectural) history of the Bärenzwinger itself: In its garden she creates a fragile construction made of bricks that challenges the massive brick building’s perceived immutability.
