In his lecture, architectural historian Dr Carsten Schmidt looks behind the façades of Berlin-Mitte and searches for traces of the hidden synagogues in the backyards of the former tenement districts. He provides an overview of the buildings, whose history has always been linked to a small association and an immediate neighbourhood, reconstructs their architectural design and highlights the features that distinguish them from the large, well-known synagogues in Berlin. The lecture will draw on research findings for his latest book, ‘Synagoge Feuerland: Der zerstörte Tempel von Berlin-Mitte’ (Synagogue Feuerland: The destroyed temple of Berlin-Mitte).
