Open Monument Day 2026
As one of the last remaining witnesses to Berlin’s early history, the ruins of the Franciscan Monastery Church are among the city’s most important architectural monuments that are both open to the public and used as a cultural venue. Located in Berlin’s historic and present-day centre, the ruins are considered an outstanding example of medieval architecture. Since 2016, artists and curators have been invited each year to bring the Klosterruine into the present and open up new perspectives on this historic site.
Open Monument Day has been held throughout Germany since 1993 as part of the European Heritage Days. Every year on the second Sunday in September – and in Berlin also on the preceding Saturday – owners and custodians of historic monuments, together with volunteers committed to heritage preservation, open the doors to architectural monuments, archaeological sites and historic gardens that are otherwise not generally accessible to the public.
Open Monument Day is Germany’s largest and most popular event dedicated to cultural heritage and monument preservation. In Berlin, visitors can usually choose from almost 1,000 events and activities across all districts, most of them free of charge. This makes the heritage weekend Berlin’s largest collectively organised cultural project.
This year, Open Monument Day takes place in Berlin on September 12 and 13, 2026, under the theme “NetzWERKE: Denkmale & Infrastruktur” (“NetWORKS: Monuments & Infrastructure”). The programme will be published on August 1, 2026.
